Westpac has hired a former executive of Standard Chartered Bank to head its consumer division.

Chris de Bruin currently works as CEO of non bank lender Deem in Dubai.

de Bruin has also worked as president of digital platform at Zafin, a financial technology provider.

Prior to Zafi, he spend 13 years at Standard Chartered in various jobs across Asia and the Middle East, with his most recent role as global head retail products and digital banking.

Westpac CEO Peter King highlighted de Bruin’s ‘fintech’ credentials.

His “strong background in in fintech and digital banking, will be particularly valuable as we work to enhance our digital capability and better meet customers’ changing needs,” King said.

Richard Burton has been acting chief executive of Westpac’s consumer division and will remain in the job until de Bruin begins with the bank in early 2020.

The role became vacant after it was revealed in July that David Lindberg would leave the bank to take up a job with the Royal Bank of Scotland.
