Canada: Business owners urge Ottawa to drop federal tax changes

The Coalition for Small Business Tax Fairness, a unified group of businesses, is gathering momentum against the federal government’s tax proposals that would change the way small businesses are taxed in Canada. The coalition has 42 business groups representing a wide range of business owners from a variety of sectors, including the Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada, Canadian Pharmacists Association and Canadian Institute of Steel Construction.

"If the new proposals are implemented, small business owners will be prevented from sharing their income with family members, change capital gains rules and inhibit certain aspects of saving within the business."

Furthermore, despite stating that the small business corporate tax rate would be cut to 9 per cent, the government has not yet done so.

As a result, to fight against the new proposals, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business sent a petition containing 14,691 letters in September.
