New Zealand: Immigration New Zealand to accept UnionPay

New Zealand has launched the 5-year multiple entry visa for Chinese citizens, with Immigration New Zealand accepting UnionPay credit and debit cards for tourists applying and paying online after 8th May 2017.  Immigration New Zealand says that it is an important step in improving its service for Chinese visitors, who according to Tourism New Zealand exceeded 400,000 in 2016. UnionPay Platinum and Diamond cards may also be used as a verification in place of a bank statement, wage certificate and incumbency certificate when applying for individual New Zealand visas from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. UnionPay International says it will continue to expand its network, with 80% of ATMs and more than 30,000 POS terminals across New Zealand accepting UnionPay cards. While UnionPay has increased acceptance among merchants in New Zealand there is still a long way to as August 2016 RFi Group data indicates that only 7% of card accepting merchants currently accept UnionPay cards, compared to 95% that for Visa/Mastercard debit and credit and 34% that accept American Express credit/charge cards.
