Singtel launches VIA initiative in Thailand

Singapore’s Singtel launches VIA Initiative in Thailand in an aim to unify the digital payment landscape in Asia. Under this initiative, customers of Singtel’s e-wallet Dash can pay for their purchases in Thailand by scanning the merchant’s QR code. The amount payable will be converted to Singapore currency and users can decide if they want to proceed with their payment. There will be no additional charge, but foreign exchange rate will be applied.

Singtel is partnering with Thailand’s top wireless operator AIS and Kasikornbank to launch this network and is expected to bring in more telcos from other countries. The network will allow mobile wallets from both telco and non-telco companies to be offered on the same digital payment scheme. Digital payment usage in Thailand has been consistently high according to RFi Group’s Thailand Retail & Priority Banking Council, showing great appetite for this initiative.
