Santander Mastercard cardholders in Mexico will be able to make contactless payments via Garmin and FITBIT smartwatches from November 2018, making Mexico the first country in Latin America to provide such capabilities.
At the beginning of September 2018, major media outlet El Universal announced that the main banks operating in Mexico will start the widespread promotion of contactless payments in the country, starting from Q4 2018 and continuing into 2019.
To make payments via a smartwatch, Santander cardholders simply need to download the Garmin Connect or Fitbit app on their smartphone and register the Santander Mastercard credit or debit card on the app. Contactless payments can then be made by tapping the smartwatch itself against a payment terminal to make purchases.
According to RFi Group data, Mexicans expect to rely on cash less going forward and the country ranks among the markets with the highest openness to new payment methods. These conditions should provide a fertile environment for the proliferation of contactless payments technologies.
