UK: Alipay transactions piloted by Barclaycard

Across eight retail stores in the UK, Barclaycard is currently piloting payment acceptance (POS) of the Chinese-owned mobile and online payment system Alipay. This system aims to enable customers to pay in store in CNY at a competitive exchange rate. Positive results are expected from the pilot due to the number of Chinese students and expats currently living in the UK. In addition, Chinese tourism spend is expected to amount to more than £1 billion this year.

Rita Liu the Head of Alipay EMEA stated that “the UK has always been one of the most welcoming destinations for Chinese tourists both for sightseeing and shopping”. This will also be beneficial for merchants, as Barclaycard states: “[They] will also have the opportunity to raise their profile through Alipay’s lifestyle app”. This relates to Alipay’s digital shop-front which could potentially increase publicity for individual retailers. It is expected that a broader roll-out across UK stores will continue over the coming months, extending the pilot into 2018.
